Building Strong Foundations Through Sport: ARL and HART Sport Launch Headstart Partnership
Removing barriers, supporting Tamariki.
HART Sport alongside Auckland Rugby League is proud to announce the launch of the Headstart Programme, a new community-focused approach designed to support Tamariki, reduce barriers to entry, and strengthen the grassroots foundation of Rugby League in Tāmaki Makaurau.
A Practical Step Towards Greater Inclusion
The Headstart Programme is rooted in a simple but powerful idea: when kids are given the right tools and support from the start, their confidence, enjoyment, and development in sport thrive.
Every Under 6 player across Auckland Rugby League’s 30 affiliated clubs will receive free HART Sport headgear to support their early Rugby League journey. Additionally, HART mouthguards will be provided to all players up to and including Under 12s – a move aimed at ensuring that cost or access to basic gear isn’t a barrier to playing safely.
Mark Craig – ARL Clubs and Partnerships Manager says:
“At ARL, we know that the first steps in sport can shape a young person’s entire journey — on and off the field. The Headstart Programme is about removing those early barriers and making sure every child feels welcome, safe, and supported the moment they put on a jersey.
It’s not just about gear — it’s about giving kids the confidence to show up, the tools to participate, and the sense that they belong. Partnering with HART Sport, who share that kaupapa, makes this initiative even more meaningful for our clubs and communities.”
Backed by Shared Values
The partnership with the ARL is built on strong alignment in values. Both organisations believe that sport is more than just competition — it’s a platform for growth, belonging, and long-term wellbeing.
“Sport is where so many young people first experience teamwork, challenge, and self-belief,” says Andrew Mills, HART Sport’s National Sales Manager, “and we’re proud to support a programme that gives more young players the chance to access that experience in a safe and supportive way.”
Delivering Value to Clubs and Communities
The ARL HART Sport Headstart Programme is about more than just gear — it’s an investment in the long-term health and vibrancy of our league community. By supporting early participation, the programme also strengthens club engagement, builds confidence in parents and whānau, and sends a strong signal that Rugby League is a game for everyone.
As the game continues to grow, HART Sport and the ARL are committed to ensuring that every young person — regardless of background — has the opportunity to play, belong, and thrive.
Together, we’re building something bigger than Rugby. We’re building strong, confident communities.
