How to Play GaGa Ball: Rules & Tips for Schools

29 Oct 2026

What is GaGa Ball?

GaGa Ball is a fast-paced, high-energy game played inside an octagonal pit. It combines dodging, striking, running and jumping as players try to hit opponents with a soft foam ball below the knees.

The aim is simple: stay moving, avoid the ball and be the last player standing!

GaGa Ball is easy to learn, quick to play and suitable for groups of all sizes. Games typically last just a few minutes, making it easy to play multiple rounds and keep everyone involved.

Kids playing GaGa Ball in the HART GaGa Zone octagon pitWhat You Need

  • A GaGa pit – the HART GaGa Zone: eight soft, vinyl-covered foam panels that join with Velcro into a 4.5m playing area, indoors or outdoors.
  • One ball – a lightweight foam or inflatable ball, about 20cm across. Choose from our wide range of play balls.

Ball tip: A smaller ball keeps the game fast-paced and works well for younger players with smaller hands. It is easier to track and less likely to move unpredictably. Larger balls may be easier to manage in bigger spaces or with mixed-age groups, but can slow the pace if they are too bulky.

How to Play

  1. Get Ready
All players enter the pit and stand against the walls with one hand touching the wall.
  2. Start the Game
The ball is thrown into the centre of the pit. Players call “GA” on the first two bounces and “GO” on the third bounce. The game then begins.
  3. Hit the Ball
Players use an open or closed hand to hit the ball. The ball must stay on the ground and players cannot hold or carry it.
  4. Avoid Being Hit
If the ball touches a player below the knee, that player is out, and must leave the pit. If the ball hits above the knees, play continues.
  5. Watch the Ball
If a player catches the ball before it bounces, the player who hit the ball is out.
  6. Keep Moving
Players can dodge, jump and move around the pit to avoid being hit. Players cannot deliberately hold or trap the ball.
  7. Speed Up the Game
For larger groups or longer games, a second ball can be added to increase the action.
  8. Win the Round
The last player remaining in the pit wins the round. Once the round is over, everyone can jump back in and start again!

Big group? Add a second ball to keep everyone busy and speed things up.

Tips for Teachers and Coaches

  • Set clear boundaries and safety rules before the first round, and follow your school or organisation's supervision guidelines.
  • Explain the "below the knee" rule up front as it settles most arguments.
  • Run short rounds so players who are out are never waiting long.
  • Use a soft ball, a smaller one for younger groups, and a second ball for big classes.
  • Remind players to keep their eyes on the ball and their feet moving.
